Good day! I’m DJ Ponyboy and welcome to the New Music Mix Tape for March, 2024. That was “Lil’ Freak” by Baby No Money, rapping over samples of “Le Freak”, the 1978 number one hit by the band Chic.
From new rap sampling old disco to R&B that sounds like a brand-new old yesterday, it’s husband-and-wife team The War And Treaty with their soulful new tune “Stealing a Kiss”, here on KMTJ-DB – Your Mix Tape Journey – Denver, CO.
That last song was “Love of a Girl”, a new single from the Avett Brothers, featuring their signature vocal harmonies and energetic guitar. They are currently on tour, and will be visiting Colorado at the Red Rocks Amphitheater June 5th, 6th, and 7th.
Up next, an extra-unique tune from the EDM duo Justice. “Incognito” is a single from their upcoming album – the first in eight years. I also advise checking out the track “Saturnine”. I’m DJ Ponyboy on KMTJ-DB.
“It’s 2AM in London”, the newest single from Morgan Wade. She begins her tour this month and will be coming to Ball Arena July 31st. Go see her if you enjoy her music and have the means; one of the great joys of living is enjoying live music.
Speaking of joy, Samara Joy. She’s an amazing new young jazz musician you should pay attention to. Having released her first album in 2021 at only 22 years old, she continues to mature and impress. She is on tour, but unfortunately will not be coming through Denver.
This next tune comes from the new Netflix film Shirley, which follows the 1972 presidential run of Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman to be elected to the United States Congress. Be inspired by Samara Joy singing “Why I’m Here”.
That was Yard Act – a new rock band from Leeds, West Yorkshire – with the song “A Vineyard for the North” from their just-released second album Where’s My Utopia? They are on tour but most dates appear to be in Europe.
Iron & Wine pairing up with Fiona Apple for this next number. He just kicked off the tour for his new album Light Verse, set for release at the end of April, and is coming to Denver’s Mission Ballroom on June 17th. Here is Iron & Wine with Fiona Apple – “All in Good Time”, on KMTJ-DB, Denver, CO.
Argy with a unique and complex EDM track. He’ll be at Temple Nightclub in Denver May 18th plying his brand of what he calls “melodic techno”. I expect a good time will be had by all.
Amira Elfeky is a 22 year old up-and-coming rock artist from Los Angeles, inspired by punk, grunge, and nu-metal. These influences are evident in her music and her new song “Secrets” gives strong Evanescence vibes.
But first, a new single from St. Louis, Missouri’s Sexyy Red. Active since the 2010’s, she achieved popularity with her viral 2023 single “Pound Town”. Here’s “Get it Sexyy” on KMTJ-DB, Denver.
I’m DJ Ponyboy. That was “Drop” by Zeddy Will, a 22 year old artist who got his start on TikTok. Before that Amira Elfeky with “Secrets”, and Sexyy Red with “Get it Sexyy”.
As Monty Python might say, “Now for something completely different”.
Kamasi Washington is a very talented multi-instrumentalist composer and producer born and raised in Los Angeles.
The final track of his upcoming fifth studio album Fearless Movement, “Prologue” features intricate horn arrangements backed by a rhythm of drums, shakers, and cymbals building to a cacophony that gives way to bongos and a more subdued ending.
Some brand new R&B for you from Grammy-award-winning artist Kenyon Dixon. That was “Can I Have This Groove”.
SHAED is a trio composed of Chelsea Lee, and twin brothers Max and Spencer Ernst. Max is gay and Chelsea and Spencer are married with a daughter.
“Rocket in the Sky” – their first single in two years – is a lush and inviting love ballad that wraps you in beautiful harmonies; I very much look forward to hearing more from these three!
That was Snake Eyes from Philadelphia rapper Tierra Whack (her real name). She used to perform as Dizzle Dizz before realizing her birth name was actually dope AF.
Kacey Musgraves is touring her new album Deeper Well and will be coming to Fiddler’s Green September 15th. Here is a new single off that album; on shelves now, it’s “Too Good to Be True” on your Mix Tape Journey, KMTJ-DB, Denver.
This next tune wants a bit of thought, as I’m conflicted on the message in the lyrics: are they sweet or are they toxic?
I’m DJ Ponyboy and I’m curious what you think; visit mixtapejourney.com to share your comment. But first, listen closely to Halle with “In Your Hands”.
Laufey, with Goddess, a hauntingly beautiful and vocally interesting commentary on the struggles of being a performer. I especially like the line, “I’m a goddess on stage, human when we’re alone”.
As musical trends continue to march forward, it is always fun to hear new music that evokes the old days. Digital Slaves manages to simultaneously give 80’s new wave, 90’s clubbing, and turn-of-the-century Rammstein while remaining relevant in our current sonic landscape. I’m DJ Ponyboy and this is Gesaffelstein.
A new number from Nashville’s young artist ERNEST, featuring Jelly Roll. ERNEST is on tour and will be at Ball Arena May 31st with David Lee Murphy.
Pete Seeger was an American folk singer and social activist who penned such hits as “If I Had a Hammer” (a hit for Peter, Paul, and Mary), and “Turn, Turn, Turn” (the Byrds).
One of his works, with an American Indian aesthetic, also invites comparisons to Irish sean-nós singing, the beautiful vocals making up most of the music. With her gorgeous cover of Coyote, My Little Brother, it’s Mitski on KMTJ-DB, Denver, CO.
With his heartbreaking song How to Change a Tire, about growing up with an absent father, that was Alabama’s 22 year old Zach Hood.
Before that 34-year-old American artist Mitski, who is currently touring and will be coming to Red Rocks and Fiddler’s Green in September.
I once attended a master class taught by Armin van Buuren and I love that this next song has his sound all over it, while still managing to remain fresh and relevant. Great job, man! What Took You So Long on KMTJ-DB.
Armin van Buuren, with Gryffin. I’m DJ Ponyboy. Thank you for joining me today and the first Sunday of every month to enjoy the best new music on New Music Mix Tape.
I saved my very favourite song for last. Wyatt Flores is a new artist from Oklahoma and I think he is going places. He is currently touring his new album Half Life and will be performing at Red Rocks in May and the Ogden Theatre in July.
Wyatt Flores with “Wish I Could Stay” on KMTJ-DB – your Mix Tape Journey – Denver, CO. I’m Ponyboy. Stay gold.
