Good day! I’m DJ Ponyboy. Welcome to the Happy Spoopy Season: Halloween 2024 Theme Mix Tape (Side A) on KMTJ-DB – Your Mix Tape Journey – Denver, Colorado.
Growing up the son of an Evangelical Christian pastor, I was not permitted to listen to secular music, let alone attend Halloween parties. Instead, I attended “Fall Festivals” dressed as Biblical and historical characters, with hymns as the soundtrack.
I always wanted to attend a fun Halloween party, but never had the chance growing up. Today, I am giving my inner child the party he never received by collecting songs I think would make for a fun spooky kids’ Halloween party soundtrack.
Kicking us off is Donovan with “Season of the Witch”.
“Thriller” by Michael Jackson featuring the spooky voice and wicked laugh of Vincent Price – is there anything that sounds more delightfully evil? Before that Donovan and “Season of the Witch”.
One movie I was not allowed to watch growing up was Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. From that film, Danny Elfman’s “This is Halloween” on KMTJ-DB, Denver.
Another movie I did not see until I was an adult was 1984’s Ghostbusters. Ray Parker Jr. with the theme from that movie; before that “This is Halloween” from 1993’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Up next, a song that needs no introduction – it’s a graveyard smash! Boris Pickett on KMTJ-DB – Your Mix Tape Journey – Denver, Colorado.
You may be wondering if the title of today’s mix tape is a misspelling – I can assure you it is not!
According to Merriam-Webster.com, “Spoopy is amusing internet slang describing cute, comical, or silly versions of typically spooky subject matter such as ghosts and skeletons. Cute dog in a sheet-ghost costume? That’s spoopy!”
I’m DJ Ponyboy. Continuing the theme, enjoy “Spooky, Scary Skeletons” and “Grim Grinning Ghosts” on KMTJ-DB, Denver.
“Spooky, Scary Skeletons” followed by “Grim Grinning Ghosts”.
I’m DJ Ponyboy. Happy Spoopy Season to those who love all things spooky and those undecided.
As a child, I was not allowed to experience certain things, like attending Halloween parties, or going trick-or-treating. I was not familiar with most of these songs and I would have NOT been allowed to listen to them as a kid.
If that describes you and you are just now catching up, consider checking out Chasing Sunshine: A Guide to Discovering Popular Music as an Adult, where I share the secrets I used to go from sheltered homeschooled kid to well-listened music curator.

Up next, Warren Zevon with “Werewolves of London” on KMTJ-DB, Denver.
One song I do recall encountering as a child (though not through family or friends) is our next tune.
Sheb Wooley tells the story of a poor, misunderstood rock-n-roll alien in 1958’s “The Purple People Eater”.
To round out our Happy Spoopy Season Mix Tape, a song from another film I did not see until I went off to college.
Get on your feet and get ready to follow directions for our next number, an interactive dance tune from the 1975 film adaptation of The Rocky Horror Picture Show – “Time Warp” – on KMTJ-DB, Denver.
I’m DJ Ponyboy. Thank you for indulging me and letting my inner child run wild. I never got to go trick-or-treating, hand out candy, or attend a Halloween party as a kid, so today’s music was a little healing exercise.
Thank you for joining me; I hope you enjoyed my list of tunes perfect for a children’s Halloween party! Make sure to come back in two weeks for side B, featuring spooky tunes for an adult audience.
