Good day!
You’re listening to KMTJ-DB – Your Mix Tape Journey – Denver, Colorado.
I’m your host, DJ Ponyboy and I am thrilled to keep Summer 2025’s celebratory water theme going! Two weeks ago we sang the praises of partying by the water, whether a pool or the wide vast ocean, with Side A: Summer By the Water. Next week we will keep chugging along with Side C: Summer In the Water!
But first, let’s jump into Side B: Summer On the Water, celebrating summers spent riding atop watercraft – from pool floaties to cruise ships!
As American country artist Ashley McBryde shares, some days are just “Better on the Water”.
If you’re on a boat on the water and you don’t post about it on Instagram or TikTok, did it even happen? What’s the first thing you do when you get on a boat? Start telling everyone you know you’re on a boat!
The Lonely Island and T-Pain kicking off a Boaty McBoatFace double-shot on KMTJ-DB – Denver, Colorado.
The Beach Boys and “Sloop John B”. We remember the recent death of influential member Brian Wilson and hope he found a joyful and peaceful afterlife.
It’s been only recently that I finally understood the meaning of the chorus (surely obvious to everyone else) where he says, “the canvas can do miracles”.
Enjoy our next song, from 1979’s self-titled debut album, Christopher Cross, “Sailing”. And either puzzle the meaning like I did for years (is he commenting on the power of art in the medium of paint on canvas?) or laugh at me if you already know. (Please don’t laugh at me; that would hurt my feelings. ❤️) And for those who don’t understand it, I won’t leave you hanging! Stick around right here on KMTJ-DB, Denver for the answer right after this.
He’s talking about the sails! The canvas sailboat sails! How could I be so dense?! It just goes to show you even smart people can do dumb things sometimes! That doesn’t instantly make them dumb people. (And conversely …)
When you feel down, sometimes you just need a friendly voice to invite you to “Tie Up”. Zac Brown Band now.
Our next song was everywhere when it came out in 2011, but my favourite version isn’t the radio release. More details next, but first “Sail” by AWOLNATION on KMTJ-DB – Your Mix Tape Journey – Denver, Colorado.
That song, “Sail”, was released on AWOLNATION’s 2011 album Megalithic Symphony and absolutely exploded! The next year, they released a single with nine remixed versions of the song – 2012’s RE/Sail. My favourite is “Sail – Glitch Hop Remix Mongoose”.
You can hear that track and other Summer/Water-related tunes I was unable to include on this month’s theme mix tapes by joining my Patreon tier of Beat Backer (only $17/mo) or above. You will receive access to bonus playlists for mix tapes all the way back to May 2024, along with other great benefits!
Jimmy Buffett kicks off a boat-magic musical double-shot by reminding us to be grateful for the little intangible things that make life worth living, in “Something ‘Bout a Boat”. After that, country band Old Dominion continues the theme by expressing the sentiment that being on the water can help you forget all the bad in your life, in “I Was On a Boat That Day”, on KMTJ-DB – Denver.
I Was On a Boat That Day Lyrics
Old Dominion with “I Was On a Boat That Day”. Jimmy Buffett before that with “Something ‘Bout a Boat”.
The Hues Corporation was an American pop and soul trio, formed in Santa Monica, California, best known for their 1974 single – our next tune – which sold over 2 million copies, hit number one on the charts, and is credited as helping establish disco as a genre.
Hues Corporation with “Rock the Boat”. Don’t rock the boat, baby!
I am very grateful I have been lucky enough to see our next artist in concert;, but would love another chance!
Active since 1972, American rock band Styx hails from Chicago, Illinois. Released on their seventh studio album, 1977’s The Grand Illusion, “Come Sail Away” is one of their biggest hits, peaking at #8 on the Billboard charts.
Closing out Side B of this month’s theme mix tape, Summer On the Water, is Styx with “Come Sail Away” on KMTJ-DB – Denver, Colorado.
I’m DJ Ponyboy, having more fun than a human being should be allowed to have! I hope you have had a blast joining me today for Side B: Summer On the Water. Make sure to come back next week for the exciting conclusion of this month’s theme with Side C: Summer In the Water.
