Good day and welcome to the June 2024 New Music Mix Tape. I’m your host DJ Ponyboy and I am absolutely tickled to be able to share all these amazing new tunes with you right here on KMTJ-DB – Your Mix Tape Journey – Denver, Colorado.
Kicking us off it’s Peso Pluma with Cardi B. “Put ‘Em In the Fridge”.
Julius Rodriguez is an artist of Haitian descent hailing from White Plains, NY. His fresh and unique style of jazz has been inspiration for collaborations with diverse artists like Wu Tang Clan, A$AP Rocky, and Macy Gray.
Check out his newest instrumental release, “Run To It (The CP Song) here on KMTJ-DB, Denver.
Up next, new artist Nep with her adorable song “Lovelace”. I especially love the spoken word clip at the beginning.
While this next tune features a lot of (for me) rather triggering religious imagery, the music stands alone, and I just had to include it on this month’s mix tape.
This song grips you right from the beginning, starting to mix it up at only 15 seconds in and continuing on a rollicking seven-minute journey through several distinct musical genres.
Here is Raye with “Genesis”.
Our next song pairing is about grief and honouring the past. The first song (Massachusetts by Jensen McRae) is about the loss of a relationship, but many of the lines could apply to grieving the loss of a loved one as well. It is followed by Waylon Wyatt with his heartbreaking track “Phoning Heaven” here on KMTJ-DB, Denver.
Waylon Wyatt with “Phoning Heaven”. Jensen McRae before that with “Massachusetts”.
If you are grieving right now, *hugs*. I wish you all the warmth and friendship and support. I believe that no one has truly left us as long as we continue to remember them and honour their memory.
I’d like to take this opportunity to remember a dear friend of mine who has passed on. His name was Alan Patterson and he was a musician; though he passed in 2016, you can still listen to his 2002 album Almost There on Spotify.
While I must offer a content warning for those who suffer from religious trauma like I do, he made beautiful music and I find it comforting to hear his voice.
I love this new track by Imagine Dragons; my favourite part is how they have managed to very much retain their style while keeping their sound fresh and new.
Here is “Wake Up” on KMTJ-DB, Denver, Colorado.
Our next song is a fun one! Nashville-raised and Los Angeles-based artist Sherwyn utilizes interpolation (we discussed interpolation in the May 2024 Connections Mix Tape) to create a brand-new track called “Slow Rider” while working in echoes and inspiration from the classic 1975 song by the funk band War – “Low Rider”.
That song referencing the 1975 tune “Low Rider”. Hear that song and other related tracks by checking out our exclusive Mix Tape Journey bonus playlists.
Access to all bonus playlists can be had for as little as $17 per month through our Patreon tiers of Beat Backer and above. Follow the link at the bottom of any page on our website.
Active since 2010, English indie rock band Glass Animals is releasing their fourth album, I Love You So F***ing Much, which includes this fantastic track.
Here is “A Tear in Space (Airlock)” on KMTJ-DB – Denver, Colorado.
Glass Animals, coming to Red Rocks Amphitheater September 3rd and 4th.
Up next, Denzel Curry, TiaCorine, and A$AP Ferg with “Hot One”.
Growing up listening to music ranging from hair metal to emo to rock and country, Bailey Zimmerman shares his unique country sound on his new track “New to Country”.
Thank you for joining me to celebrate my birthday month. All through the month of July, use code PONYMONTH (all caps) to receive 20% off any products for sale on the Mix Tape Journey web site.
Keeping it diverse, here is American pop-punk band Story So Far with their new track “Watch You Go” on KMTJ-DB – Your Mix Tape Journey – Denver, Colorado.
Kaleena Zanders with her new EDM track, “Looking for Joy”. Before that, The Story So Far with their pop-punk tune, “Watch You Go”.
There is so much great new music! Thank you for joining me on the first Sunday of every month to hear the latest and greatest new music together.
I dare you to listen through an entire New Music Mix Tape and then tell me there is no good new music.
If you agree, I challenge you to share a New Music Mix Tape with a friend who complains there is no good new music.
Up next, one of this month’s more unique tracks; weaving in 80’s rock, rap, and more, listen for the fantastic use of tubular bells.
Here is JpegMafia with “Don’t Rely On Other Men” on KMTJ-DB, Denver.
Our next pairing approaches the same coin from different sides. Your Old Droog asks, “How Do You Do It?” while Maren Morris answers the musical question with “Cut!”, explaining it isn’t as easy as it looks.
Maren Morris; before that, Your Old Droog.
I have fallen in love with our next artist and I can’t wait to hear more from him! Tyler Childers up next with “Song While You’re Away” on KMTJ-DB, Denver, Colorado.
Up next, Debbii Dawson. Don’t worry. You are not experiencing déjà vu, nor do you need to adjust your radio dial. This new Minnesotan artist just keeps popping up!
With the distinction of being the only artist to be featured on THREE (3) consecutive New Music Mix Tapes, we heard her track “Happy World” on the April 2024 New Music Mix Tape, and “Turn the TV On” on the May New Music Mix Tape.
Check out her latest release, “Solitude” on KMTJ-DB – Your Mix Tape Journey – Denver, Colorado!
Debbii Dawson is on tour, and will be coming to Mission Ballroom September 28th. Get your tickets today.
Up next, ISOxo, Knock2, RL Grime, ISOKnock collaborate on “Smack Talk”.
Closing out this month’s mix tape, Gryffin with “Dance Through the Night”.
What a fantastic track to dance out the door to!
Thank you so much for joining me today for the June 2024 New Music Mix Tape. I hope I was able to help introduce you to a new favourite song!
Until next time, I’m DJ Ponyboy. Stay gold.
